Compressed Air Dryer: Overview

Knowing the importance of a dependable compressed air dryer is necessary in the operation of industrial plants. A compressed air dryer is the one that removes moisture from an air dryer system to prevent the downstream of the equipment. Contaminants start to build up in the air dryer when the moisture is not totally removed. Scale, bacteria, rust and water will begin to form in the compressed air dryer, thus causing it to be damaged and will also trigger the contaminants to destroy product batches or pollute food or pharmaceutical products.

How it Works

A compressed air dryer runs the compressed air through a chamber where the desiccants like silica gel or activated alumina are filled. These desiccants absorb the moisture and trap them in its pores. For compressed air dryers with a smart controller, as soon as the dew point is saturated, the chambers are changed. The saturated desiccant is dried by the dryer’s hot air. The purge of hot air dries away the moisture and prepares the desiccant to its next cycle. Other air dryers have a set timer for the chambers to change. For most compressed air dryer available in the market, the design is for it to have a -40°F dew point. It is a proven fact that at this temperature, growth of bacteria is eliminated and this is the right amount that prevents freeze-ups.

Different Types of Compressed Air Dryers

1) Refrigerated Compressed Air Dryer

2) Regenerative Compressed Air Dryer

3) Membrane Compressed Air Dryer

A dependable compressed air dryer is a source of energy used in various processes and operations. It is used in heaters, ventilators, air conditioning units, motors and process actuators. Air is supplied in varying degrees of pressure and filtration depending on the use. A compressed air dryer may also be used for systems in low pressure and with pneumatic control.

Choose a Dependable Compressed Air Dryer

For the operation of an industrial plant, a compressed air dryer is vital to deliver solutions for air purifying needs. The role of the compressed air dryer is to improve the air quality that will be circulating throughout the entire plant, that is, from the location of the compressor to all other rooms in operation.

Choosing a dependable compressed air dryer depends on the dryer’s ability to supply air filtration needs. It should perform reliably and efficiently meaning, the compressed air dryer should increase the industrial plant’s productivity and lower operating costs or energy requirements through the volume of air supplied by the air dryer. It should be suited to the needs of the entire plant’s operations. So the compressed air dryer that you choose should be able to supply air quality requirements at a minimum energy level required.

Are you looking for the best compressed air dryers? Despite the countless choices you have in the industry, it’s not really going to be a very easy one. After all, a cheap air dryer doesn’t really mean it’s the most advisable, in the same way that you really can’t equate high quality with super-high price.

Ways to Find the Right One

You therefore need tips that will be your comprehensive guide when you’re out there, searching for the most appropriate compressed air dryer for your company:

1. Go for those that are multifunctional. A number of air dryers today can actually perform two important functions. They are not only known for their adsorption methods, but they also act as refrigerants. This way, you can eliminate buying separate dryers, and you can easily regulate the pressure dew point, especially when the weather changes. You can also maximize the performance of your compressed air dryer and save energy along the way.

2. Choose a refrigerated compressed air dryer when you’re trying to save. If you want to lower down the costs of your capital or investment, you better choose a refrigerated air dryer. For one, it has a very low initial cost, and it doesn’t take much for you to operate and maintain it. What’s more, it doesn’t get easily damaged by oil. You just need to watch out for its dew point limitation.

3. Use desiccant dryers when you’re working in a hazardous environment. A compressed dryer that has a desiccant is plainly called desiccant air dryer. What it does is to absorb the water vapor form the air stream as well as remove the moisture using an internal or external heat during the regeneration process. The good thing about this is that it can go to extremely low dew points, and you don’t even have to worry of the machine eventually freezing up—it can go between -40 and -100 degrees Fahrenheit. Moreover, it can be attached to locations that are very dangerous, and you don’t need to go near it to operate the device properly since it can be handled remotely. Nevertheless, there are minor disadvantages that you have to take note of too. You may have to set aside quite a large amount of money for your investment. You also need to change the desiccant bed regularly to ensure that it can still work smoothly. You also need to watch out for oil that may cover the air stream.

4. For convenience, opt for deliquescent compressed air dryer. If you don’t like to be hassled with constant maintenance of your air dryer, or if you want to minimize your labor costs by hiring few operators, you can choose deliquescent dryer. First, it doesn’t need to run with power supply, so you can lower the installation costs. There are no also moving parts to think about, and since it doesn’t have electricity, you can expect lower charges for in your electric bills. This is also one of the dryers that can be attached right outside of your building. This is because it has an automatic drain that will protect the equipment from freezing.

This is such a frustrating problem! Why aren’t there better dryer designs? Does anyone make a decent vent hook-up, or aluminum hose that stays in place and don’t fall out in the back of the wall? Anyone have something that actually stays in place? I don’t want laundry detergent scented air inside the house.

Tisha Miller asked:

People mostly favor on electrical use models because compared with the natural gas fueling; it is more dangerous because it could leak combustion products like carbon monoxide into your home. If you own a gas dryer, and you want to make sure the safety about carbon monoxide leaks, there are products like home detector of leaks because a person could hardly tell whether there’s a leak of gas because it is odorless and dangerous. So, to make sure and have a peace of mind, better purchase one.

Owners of dryers are recommended to have their dryers inspected every year and any other appliances that involves fuel. Because gas authorities indicate that gas leaks should not occur it is professionally services and has a schedule for maintenance. Any work engaged in replacing, adjusting and other work for the appliance should be done by the professionals.

Don’t force your self to attempt in doing the work yourself.

Research shows that people are not aware of electromagnetic field surrounding their appliance like dryers and they are not aware that being exposed to this is dangerous for this brings diseases. And they should know that they should give special precautions to keep away from exposure when the machine or appliances are operating. Although these studies are still haven’t proven that electromagnetic field brings diseases and give other health problems. And the electromagnetic field that surrounds the devices reduces rapidly when you move away from the appliance. So, if your uncertain about this, just simply lessen being exposed with electric appliance while it runs.

Safe drying

• Owners of dryers should keep in mind that their vents and exhaust ways should be well organized. Because without this, tiny particles of lint goes into the air and these particles could cause problems in breathing for people inside the house.

• Vents and exhaust ways should be periodically checked for damages and tears for repairs. And metal ducts are better that ribbed plastic hose, because it can be bent easily and produce lint into the air.

• Lint buildup is the most cause of fires in North America every year of about 4,000 fires. Which could be prevented by cleaning the filter in every use and unplugging appliances at least twice a year

• Don’t put materials like foam, rubber and plastic materials inside the dryer because it could melt and catch fire. Including Oil soaks fabrics, this could also catch fire.

• Consider checking children from playing around because if the child gets stuck on the room they could suffocate. Be sure to lock every door that when you can’t keep an eye on the children.

• Automatic dryer is very convenient in quick drying and most of Canadian families are used in having one and without it, they have no alternatives. Because of being useful by this dryers, most people forget that appliances like this could be risky in our health if it is not given enough precautions.

Glyn Booth asked:

Energy-class labels on tumble dryers are there to help you choose a more energy-efficient model thus saving money on your electricity bill, and being more eco-friendly. The classes go from A (the highest rating) to G (the lowest rating) with A being obviously the most energy efficient domestic appliances.

Generally, tumble dryers use a lot of energy to dry clothes, so most models are usually at least C-rated.

One thing to be aware of is that, in past investigations, it was found that the labels do not always correspond with how much electricity a machine uses to dry a load.

Also, the energy class of a tumble dryer depends on which program the manufacturer selects for the test, which can vary a lot from one program to another. So, for example, a White Knight tumble dryer has been A-rated, but only because the White Knight people decided to test the tumble dryer on a special low-energy program, which can take up to an amazingly long seven hours to dry a load.

As said previously, most tumble dryers have a C-class energy rating. But, even so, the energy they use varies by around a third. And, with a million tumble dryers sold in the UK every year, that will adds up. A washing line is far more energy efficient.

Imagine that everyone who buys a tumble dryer next year buys the most efficient, rather than the least efficient one – they’ would save enough energy to power hundreds of households for a year each time they all dried a full load of cottons.

Here are some tips to help you save energy and money when using your tumble dryer.

First of all, try to fit the maximum load of clothes in your tumble dryer every time you use it. Secondly, use a high spin speed on your washing machine to get your washing as dry as you possibly can. Then, clean the lint filter every time you use the machine or at least on a regular basis. A blocked filter prevents the hot air from circulating freely, so clothes take longer to dry and it costs you more! Finally, you should make sure that the room the dryer is in is well ventilated. A well ventilated room will stop the tumble dryer from overheating. If it overheats, it takes longer to finish drying a load.

Another simple tip would be to buy tumble dryer spare parts when your tumble dryer gets old. It will be much more energy efficient if you replace the parts that are too old.
