I saw a figure that said “xlerator” air hand dryers cost 95% less to use (ie, not just the up front cost) than paper towel dispensers. I am sure they are considering many factors over the life of the dryer, but I am wondering how true this is.
Does anyone know how long these machines last? Or the differences in maintenance costs?
Ultimately, I am interested in non-paper methods, and want to know about the economics of it.

We’ll assume some basic info before starting. I looked up the FIRST dryer and the FIRST roll towel I found on bing. We’ll assume 100 people a day wash their hands in your bathroom, and probably only 75 of them wash their hands, so 75 people a day need to dry their hands.
Heres a little info I looked up: A basic hand dryer like you see at McDonalds or a gas station retails at about $430. That’s retail. It comes with a 10 year warranty, so it will more than likely last longer than 10 years so the warranty will never have to be honored. (makes sense)
A case of paper towels costs $41. There are 6 rolls each with 800 feet of towel. That’s 4800 feet per box. Assume that the 75 people who dry their hands use about 3 feet of towel per wash. (some use two feet twice, some use 3 feet, some use a four foot wad of paper, etc) So, we are now at 225 feet per day of towels used. ( 75 people x 3 feet) That 4800 feet will only last us about 21 days. So, just in towels, we’ll be using a case, which costs $41, every 21 days. The hand dryer, at $430, lasts at LEAST 10 years. In one year, we’ll go through 17.38 CASES of towels, which comes to $712 for 1 year. 10 years of paper towels is equal to $7,120!
Clearly you can see that the dryer is more cost effecient, although more expensive to install. In this model, we also have to include the cost of paying someone to refill the paper towel dispenser when it’s empty, and also get rid of the huge amount of garbage this produces, and ALSO pay for the garbage truck to haul away bags upon bags upon bags of used paper towels. There will be a small electicity demand when the dryer is running, but it will come nowhere near the cost of using towels.
The best along with purchasing and power usage xlerator is much longer life expectancy the drying time and power usage xlerator is one of the drying time and installing.
